Our verdict on the Traxxas Rustler VXL
Its hard to know where to start with the Rustler, if you judge the kit on its intended use and market it is simply unbeatable. Is it a racer, no, not out the box, is it the strongest truck available, again no but it can be anything you want it to be. The aftermarket support on this truck is simply phenomenal with upgrades out there for every component meaning you can mod your truck to your exact needs.
For the beginner this truck just ticks all the boxes, it comes with everything you need except batteries for the transmitter. It has 2.4ghz radio gear as standard, includes a battery and charger and can handle up to 3S LiPo power. What you do with the truck after that is up to you.
As a high speed basher just upgrade parts as you break them to make a super strong truck that is almost indestructible. For on street racing, swap out the tyres, lower it down, stiffen it up, fit 3S LiPo’s and make sure you have enough space to control your truck at over 60mph.
The only main faults with the Rustler are the quality of some of the stock plastic components, these won’t withstand much heavy punishment and will need to be upgraded. The ESC can overheat if pushed to the limit with high powered LiPo packs, the optional fan and some common sense in how you run your truck should avoid any troubles.
What this truck offers is a huge amount of fun out the box and a nice easy to work on platform for future upgrades. Other stadium trucks handle better, some are stronger out the box stock. The Rustler just ticks more boxes, more of the time, it makes a great intro into the hobby or a great fun second, third or fourth kit etc for the experience pro.
