Traxxas E-Revo VXL tuning and hop up guide.

The E-Revo VXL is probably the most popular truck around right now and for good reason, its cheap to buy, insanely fast and huge fun.  From the feedback coming through on the truck controlling the power in such a light vehicle is where most of the issues lie.  Time spent getting the damping right will give you back a lot of the control lost when high speed running.  Being a cheap kit to start with this a great model for hopping up and more option parts are hitting the scene every day.

The Traxxas eRevo VXL is one of the most popular RC trucks on the market right now, this unique model has taken the sub 1/10th world by storm.  This model has a huge appeal to so many RC fans, making a great intro model for the newcomer to a great second, third or fourth car... For the experienced enthusiast.

Out the box this truck is fast, strong and amazing fun and with all Traxxas models is ready to roll.  Being an entry level kit there have been natural compromises in some of the materials used and the parts that come as standard.

Being RC fans part of the fun is to get the spanners out and begin the process of hoping up and tuning.  The aftermarket is filling up daily with parts for the new VXL eRevo and Traxxas themselves have released a ranger of parts to improve the truck.  On this page we’ll take a look at some of the most essential upgrades that unleash this trucks full potential.

Shocks, Springs and Suspension

With the speeds this little truck is capable of any gains in handling and ride will be appreciated, allowing you to put that performance down onto the track.  The damping out the box has received some criticism and this is probably a good place to start on your own truck.

At the very minimum a set of slightly stiffer springs is needed especially on the somewhat saggy rear end.  For the full monty Traxxas have now released a set of GTR shocks for the mini revo that give much improved damping and chassis control.

To further improve chassis response aluminium push rods and adjustable toe linkages are available.  This parts look great and remove a lot of the flex found in the standard components.

Aftermarket A-arms are now coming onto the market, although the standard parts are not too bad they are prone to break if you do a lot of jumping and are worth considering as parts fail.  Of course the options now become endless but the above should cover the essentials for your chassis upgrades.

Powerrrrrrrr! Well if we are honest most of us will have broken out the harness and hooked up twin batteries as soon as we could.  Most buyers will be well aware of the battery option on the eRevo VXL but a quick recap won’t hurt.

You can run up to twin LiPo packs in either series or parallel connection.  The series connector will allow you to fully exploit the performance of your truck unleashing both batteries at once.  The parallel connector will give increased run time but the outright power of only one battery.  Of course if you’re running twin LiPo’s this is still going to be more than enough.  A full range of spur and pinion gears are available to optimise you chosen battery arrangement.

Differential

If you have decided to buy the VXL the insane top speed and power it can handle is probably one of the main reasons why.   To further aid with the power deliver the aftermarket centre differential is worth considering.  This won’t suddenly cure the impending disaster of a full throttle stab on twin LiPo’s but it will add to the level of control you have over your truck.

The centre diff will help to reduce front end lift and give back some steering control lost under acceleration.  The diff itself is tunable further by adding different viscosity silicone oils.

With the chassis taken care of we can now move onto power...!
