Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless Edition tuning and hop up guide.

The E-Maxx is one of the best bashing monster trucks out there and is built to handle some serious abuse.  But with all those jumps and off-road running you will find the limit of some stock parts.

In this quick guide we look at some of the most essential upgrades to turn your Maxx into the ultimate basher meaning less time in the pits and more on the rough stuff.
Traxxas Steel CV Centre / Drive shafts.

The transmission of the E-Maxx has been upgraded from the original brushed version to cope with the increased torque of the Mamba system.  For the most part the transmission and shafts are strong enough.  But if you intend to run your truck on high-grip surfaces with 6S LiPo’s you may want to consider the up-rated option centre and drive shaft from Traxxas.

These steel shafts are stronger than the stock parts and look the part to boot.  Installing these will require a degree of competence at taking a model apart, but shouldn’t prove too difficult with the exceptional support from Traxxas.  This is probably not an essential upgrade but something worth considering once you have worn out or broken your stock components.
Traxxas Centre Differential

The centre diff from Traxxas is essential if you want to try and tame the power delivery when running on 6s LiPo or just to stop the wheelies on full throttle.  The centre diff smooths out the power delivery allowing you to deploy more power earlier in the corner.

The centre diff fits directly in the gearbox of your truck and comes sealed with 100k wt silicone fluid inside.  Fitting this part will require the disassembly of your trucks transmission so is not recommend for the novice Rc fan.

The action of the centre diff can be tuned using different viscosity of silicone oils to suite the track conditions on any given day.
Shocks and Springs

The stock shocks that come with E-Maxx work well but its hard to resist these big bores made from aluminium.  The look the part and do give a smoother more predictable action over the stock plastic parts.  The aluminium shocks are Teflon coated with titanium nitride coated shafts to give the smoothest action possible.

The shocks come fitted with 2.5 rate springs and are fully adjustable to suite the conditions on any given day.  Further adjustments can be made by filling the shocks with different viscosity silicone oils.

These big bores are not cheap and probably fall into the would be nice category rather than being an essential upgrade to your truck.  But if you are like us you will be ordering them sooner rather than later!
RPM aftermarket components

The aftermarket for Traxxas kits is always huge and the E-Maxx has been on the scene for some time now so the market is filled with upgraded parts.

Some of the most popular and worthwhile upgrades come from RPM and the first to consider on your E-Maxx are the up-rated A arms.  The stock components are prone to breaking after a heavy or nasty landing.  This is all but eliminated with the RPM arms as they are stronger yet also no heavier than the stock arms.  Handling is also improved as these arms offer less flex than stock.  These arms are easy to fit and also look totally great on your truck.

These are complimented nicely with the RPM shock towers and body mounts.  Giving a super-strong platform for you Maxx suspension that should handle the worst you can throw at it.
E-Maxx Aluminium Bulkheads

The Traxxas aluminium bulkheads are one of the most costly hop-ups for your Maxx but do look amazing.  These bulkheads offer that final bit of strength to your truck for tackling the biggest jumps.

The one downside with metal parts is the very reason for buying them, their strength.  When taking a big hit it will be another component that breaks, with these parts it could be your chassis.

In conclusion...

With the E-Maxx we’d say limit your hop-ups to parts that will add
strength and control and save your cash for keeping your truck running rather than buying every upgrade out there.
