HPI Savage Flux Monster Truck Review
Suspension
The HPI Savage Flux is one of the strongest trucks out of the box you can buy. Most of the components will hold up to even the most severe bashing session. The truck handles the bumps well can jump and take extreme landings. Where it falls down is handling at higher speeds with the high centre of gravity causing a lot of roll and making flipping over easy.
Wether using the standard shocks or the option HPI option metal shocks suspension tuning is a good place to start to make your truck handle better. Setting a lower ride height and stiffer rate of spring will improve the handling on flat surfaces. You have to remember this truck is not a truggy so it won’t handle like a racer but you should be able to find a good compromise in jumping and cornering performance to suit your style of driving.
HPI XL Chassis Conversion
If you want to super size your Savage Flux the the XL chassis conversion kit is the way to go. This 3mm thick extended chassis from the Nitro Savage XL gives your flux an extended wheel base and wider track making it even more stable for some serious off road action.
This kit contains all the components you need to make the conversion. We would advise this is only suitable for someone who is confident in completely rebuilding their truck as this upgrade requires the complete re-assembly of your truck.
Hop Ups and Mods
The Savage has been around for a while now so a wide range of aftermarket components are available from a wide range of manufacturers. As we have said the stock parts of the truck are very strong and up to the task required. But of course you will want to modify your truck and hop up those components that take the most abuse.
The suspension is a good place to start. HPI market some great looking aluminium components including wishbones and axle carriers. Be warned that aluminium parts are strong but will tend to bend and stay bent unlike plastic components. RPM also make great suspension arms for the Savage Flux that offer the perfect compromise between strength and flex.
One area of weakness is underneath the truck where the exposed centre driveshafts are exposed. There is a chance that these could be damaged by protruding objects and can certainly be contaminated with dirt and debris. RPM again come to the rescue with an aftermarket skid plate that is well worth buying.
If you do want to race your truck then new tyres are a good place to start. A wide range of aftermarket tyres are available but some soft multi-spike tyres provide excellent grip on dirt courses.
As with any RC car the sky is the limit when it comes to hop ups and the Savage Flux is no exception. With different bodies, light kits, wheels and tyres, a full range of aluminium parts and different electrics all available for this truck. The reality is that this truck is as strong and most people could need stock. Stick to tuning the suspension to how you want it and spend the rest of your money on some decent batteries. To really bring this truck to life invest in some high quality 3S LiPo packs and stand back.
