Traxxas X0-1

Haters gonna hate? Deal with it!

Traxxas must be rubbing their hands together right now, no car in the history of RC has made such a medis storm.  Even the non RC media has featured this car with its claims of hitting 100mph making headlines all over the web.  Strangely enough a large amount of the online and offline frenzy contains a lot of negativity.  Two main things dominate, cost and the fact you need to use an Apple iProduct to unlock it.

Castle Big Block 1717 Brushless Motor 2.4ghz iPhone App Unlock Traxxas Fail Should I buy? $1000

Lets deal with these issues first and put them to bed.

Cost: Traxxas are a company, they are passionate about the business of course, but it is just that, a business.  They can charge what they like, people will vote with their wallet, and we all know very well that plenty of people will pay the £1000 / $1200 asking price for this car.

But the only reason the price is causing stir is because its one of the highest list prices seen this side of 1/5th scale petrol.  When you look at what’s included, LiPo batteries, the latest controller, not to mention the new Castle motor its really not that unreasonable at all.  How many people out there have twice this amount and more sunk into a 1/10th touring car, Savage or E-Revo?  Expensive yes, but a rip off? No.

Next is the thorny issue of needing an Apple iProduct to unlock it, this one I can kinda get and I did feel my temperature rise when I first read the Traxxas web site.  A bit of research reveals that although its a pain if you don't have an iPhone and want to use App for controlling the ESC, ther are ways around it.  You only have to unlock the ESC once to get the 100mph top speed, you must know someone with an iPhone?  Most model shops will unlock it for you as well no doubt so that issue can be quickly overcome.  If you don't like Apple, and I get that, I think Traxxas slightly misjudged the market here, but are coming at it from a point of genuine concern.  This car will be bought by complete novices and this puts in a layer of control that will help protect the owner and Traxxas too.  A pain in the butt yes, but enough to stop you buying this car? No.

So what we are left with is an almost unique model, certainly unique in the RTR market that looks amazing has all the latest toys and goes like a stabbed rat!  What will stop you from really buying this car is access to the right place to run it.  I would love one, I would have a pre-order in yesterday if I could but I just don't have access to somewhere large and flat enough I can really use it.  Although you don't have to hit the 100mph and this thing is going to be just amazing at 40/50/60mph, lets be honest, you want to have a got at opening it right up from time to time.

What Traxxas have done is create a halo model that sits on the top of the range, raises the game and will help expose a new audience to the world of RC.  This has to be seen as a good thing, even if you will never consider buying this car.
